Our Work. Giving To The Community.

On top of working in the outdoors and enjoying everything the Sonoran Desert and Sky Islands have to offer, our members also have fun at club bonding events and hang out together at meetings that happen every other week!

Volunteering and Gaining Experience

Many of the projects we help with are associated with local non-profit and federal agencies, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and graduate students needing help conducting their research. Activities include surveys of species of interest, habitat improvement projects, and species translocations and monitoring programs, among others. These are great opportunities to gain hands-on experience in various skills such as camera trapping, telemetry, seining, species identification and handling, and research that can set our members apart on their resumes. Students also attend techniques workshops hosted by the Arizona Chapter of The Wildlife and American Fisheries Societies.

Public Outreach and Education

Outreach is an important part of building an understanding and appreciation for wildlife within the community. We participate in activities with both children and adults, educating about wildlife, fish, and careers involving the outdoors. These occur at public events and in schools. We typically display different items that biologists use in their work, preserved specimens, and animal skulls, furs, and horns. Having fun activities for the kids and answering questions the public may have about fish and wildlife also play an important role!

Attending Conferences

We are a non-profit organization, yet fund students so they can go to conferences all over the country. This gives an opportunity for our members to learn and make connections with professionals in their field. Conventions include the national conferences of The Wildlife Society and the American Fisheries Society, and the Joint Annual Meeting (JAM) of the Arizona and New Mexico Chapters of these two national organizations. In addition to networking, students participate in workshops, poster presentations, business meetings, and the entertaining wildlife/fisheries jeopardy QuizBowl.
